Stan Lee was born on December 28, 1922. He was born and raised in New York City. His parents are Celia and Jack Lieber, who are Romanian immigrants. For the most part of his life he lived in the Bronx with his parents and younger brother in one bedroom apartment. In his teenage years he worked many part-time jobs:
- Writing obituaries and press releases for the National Tuberculosis Center
- Delivering sandwiches
- Office boy for a trouser manufacturer
- An usher
- Selling subscriptions to the New York Herald Tribune
With the help of a family friend, Lee got a job at Martin Goodman's comic company, which later evolves into Marvel. He started small, by filling inkwells and getting lunch for the artists, he would also erase the left behind pencil lines. Later on he got his chance to be creative, by doing a filler piece on Captain America. He was the one to create the trademark shield for Captain America.
He moved up in the hierarchy to writing fillers to writing actual comics. Stan Lee's first superhero was the Destroyer. When the company suffered the loss of two most important people- Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Stan Lee climbed the chain again working his way to editor-in-chief at the young age of 19!
A year later Lee left for the army, he was stateside writing manuals, doing trading films and slogans. He was one of nine classified "playwrights". He returned in 1945 after a three year service. When he returned he went back to is job as editor-in-chief and in the 1970's became publisher.
Believe it or not at a time in Lee's life he worked with DC comics as a creator. When publisher Martin Goodman assigned Lee to create a team of superheros. He did just the thing, but with the inspiration from his wife, to neglect the common DC pattern of a hero with out suffering. To step outside the box and create his own world, and is exactly what he did. In his world the heroes were flawed, and had enemies that just wouldn't stop trying to destroy them. The very first superhero group that Stan Lee created with Jack Kirby was the Fantastic Four. The popularity of this led him and a team of Marvel illustrators on to create (with Kirby mainly) Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men. With Bill Everett- Daredevil and with Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man.
